Bristol Royal Hospital for Children Providing Local Health Service For Bristol Children

The Bristol Royal Hospital for Children provides a local service for Bristol children and a referral service for specialist care for families across the South West and nationally. The current building used for Bristol Royal Hospital for Children opened on April 22, 2001 and it was the first purpose-built children's hospital in the South West.

In April 2007, a further ward was opened to accommodate children's services from Southmead. Two specialist hospital services for children moved from Frenchay Hospital to create one centre of excellence in Bristol in May 2015. If ever you require the services of an interpreter during a hospital visit, there is a team of interpreters that can help you out. Depending on the situation, staff may also use a telephone interpreting service as an alternative.

Bristol man runs his first marathon just months after abdominal surgery

A Bristol handyman, who was running again less than three weeks after abdominal surgery, has raised £1,600 for Prostate Cancer UK by successfully completing his first marathon.

Alan Smith, from Stoke Gifford, is a member of the Frampton Cotterell Harriers and he completed the Berlin marathon in four hours and 21 minutes, barely four months after hernia repair surgery at Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre.

He said: “In 2011 I experienced my first hernia. The type of work I do involves a lot of heavy lifting, which damaged the left side of my abdomen. My GP sent me, under the NHS, to the treatment centre.

“I could not speak highly enough of the care I received. I was back working within three weeks, which is really important when you are self-employed.”

Healthwatch joins the City Gathering to help make Bristol a better place to live

There were over 250 attendees who came together with the aim to work collectively on agreed issues as part of the Bristol One City objectives - to really make a difference and achieve positive outcomes for people living in the city.

Healthwatch is keen to learn more about our new area and hear about work being done to tackle social inequalities. We hope to find out more from hard-to-reach groups to gather feedback about access to health and social care and how these are meeting, especially vulnerable group’s needs.

The three highest priorities for this year were set at Friday’s event held at City Hall. These include exploring ways to fund better transport systems, a new approach to food sustainability to reduce environmental impact and focus to reduce the number of families who are either homeless or in temporary accommodation.
